It’s been 10 years since we’ve started following Geralt of Rivia on his adventures as a Witcher, and developer CD Projekt Red decides to celebrate this important milestone with a heartfelt video. If you’re a fan, you might need a box of tissues at your side; this may or may not make you cry…
“Time is fleeting, but memories are forever. Love, CD Projekt Red.”
From the series’ humble beginnings with its first game released in 2007 as a PC exclusive, CD Projekt Red has come a long way. Now, the studio has become one of the most respected in the industry and has received hundreds of accolades thanks to their most recent game, The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, which won numerous Game of The Year awards in 2015.
The Witcher 3 is now considered an instant classic and will be remembered in the decades to come. Based on the hit novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher 3 is a heavily story-driven, open-world role-playing game. It is the third installment in the series.
In The Witcher 3, Geralt finally reunites with the love of his life, Yennefer. Both seek to find their long-lost adopted daughter Ciri, who is trying to run away from “The Wild Hunt”, who will stop at nothing to capture her and utilize her powers.
Because it’s a story-driven RPG, every small decision you make in the game will have its own impact, not just story-wise, as it will affect your surroundings in its own little ways. The world is filled with various NPCs that you can interact with, as well as do quests for – after all, Witchers are infamously known for being ‘mercenaries for hire’.
But what makes the game special is how detailed it is, and you are bound to experience something unique in every town you visit and NPC that you converse with. The world is dynamic and the AIs have a daily routine of their own, by which you have the power to change depending on the decisions you make in the game.
Aside from the highly detailed story mechanics, The Witcher 3 is also celebrated for its vast open world, one that CD Projekt Red obviously poured a lot of work into. The environments are picturesque and breathtaking – players may often find themselves stopping in the middle of a quest just to sit back and enjoy the beautifully 3D-crafted surroundings.
This thoughtfully detailed open world makes it so much fun for players to just explore and mess around. Oftentimes players would get sidetracked from the main story because apparently, engaging quests and beautifully designed environments are a lethally addictive combination.
Indeed, the Witcher 3 is a game that truly deserves the hundreds of accolades it has received. Because of its massive success, fans have speculated on a possible sequel. Unfortunately, CD Projekt Red thinks that a fourth sequel would be unfair to fans, so it looks like it’s not going to happen anytime soon.
Hopefully, the legacy of The Witcher continues to live on and inspire developers to create AAA games with the same amount of passion and thoughtfulness as CD Projekt Red has. Games that are made for gamers to enjoy, not just to profit millions off of.
