The first half of 2017 has been great for gamers and the upcoming Fall 2017 games have even more in store for the video game industry. One of the highly anticipated games for the season is the follow up to Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End; but this time, Nathan Drake isn’t the star of the show (Naughty Dog felt that they’ve already wrapped up his story).
Fans of the series are all familiar with the characters Nadine Ross, the fierce mercenary that runs the paramilitary organization Shoreline, and Chloe Frazer, the highly skilled treasure hunter and thief for hire. An unlikely combination, the two was decided to be brought together in a desire to find the “best and worst” character combination.
Chloe Frazer was previously seen in Uncharted 2 and 3 as a sidekick, who often bailed out in difficult situations as she ‘chose self-preservation over heroism’. “Why does she always bail out? Why won’t she finish the job? Does she have what it takes? We wanted to answer those questions.” says creative director Shaun Escayg.
After choosing Chloe as the primary protagonist, they decided that the best person to pair up with Chloe was someone who was her complete opposite, but shared ‘the common thread of self-preservation’ – it was none other than the antagonist of A Thief’s End, Nadine Ross.
“Together they provided the perfect brew for storytelling – will these characters betray each other or will they stick it out?”
In making the storyline, Naughty Dog was inspired by Hindu mythology. The Lost Legacy will follow Chloe’s quest to find the Tusk of Ganesh, an Indian treasure that dates back to the Hoysala Empire. It also holds a lot of sentimental value for Chloe as her father was an archaeologist who tried finding the Tusk in the past, but failed to do so. She then hires Nadine, who is broke and desperate to regain control of the organization, Shoreline.
The main villain of the story is a man named Asav. Not much is said about him yet, but so far we know that he is a rebel leader and has previously worked for the Indian government. Like Nadine and Chloe, he seeks the artifact for himself, but his cause is yet to be known. Naughty Dog reveals a little bit of info on Asav, stating that “…as a villain, [he] is motivated by a code. He believes he owns rights to this Indian land, and he’s part of a war that’s gone on for centuries. Recently, he’s been rekindling this war for profit.”
The story is set around six to twelve months after the conclusion to Nathan’s story. Naughty Dog said that the game will have a different feel than the rest of the Uncharted Series, but the main elements from the previous games will remain intact. As stated by Naughty Dog, “We wanted this adventure to feature all of the hallmarks of the series, from cinematic storytelling set within exotic destinations, to dynamic combat and intricate puzzles.”
The game will clock in at around 10 hours of gameplay, and it is technically an expansion pack for the entire Uncharted series. It will be released as a Playstation 4 exclusive on August 22, 2017.
